Boat racing in Cambodia is most closely associated with Bon Om Touk, the Water Festival, when long racing boats represent pagodas, communities and institutions. Provincial races may take place before the national programme in Phnom Penh.
The longboat tradition
Crews paddle narrow, brightly decorated boats in coordinated strokes. The races celebrate skill and community pride while echoing Cambodia’s historical relationship with rivers, transport and naval power.
Phnom Penh and provincial races
The national races are staged on the Tonle Sap River near the Royal Palace when the official Water Festival proceeds. Provinces may select teams through their own events on different dates. International-labelled boat-racing programmes should be verified separately.
Watching safely
- Use designated viewing areas.
- Keep children away from unprotected river edges.
- Follow police and organiser instructions.
- Carry water and protect valuables.
- Never obstruct teams, launching areas or rescue crews.
